Patchworks...

Days and days passed by. It was loaded in my mind with so much things to do and yet so much things which haven't been tried. Suddenly today, while I was thinking of putting down some new things in my hobby list and I was triggered by a thought on a distance friend. Someone I knew who likes patchworks so much for her hobby. I remembered that one time she has made me to buy her a Mag on Patchworks.

Well, I couldn't be much as good like her since I practically don't even have the skill in patchwork at all. Anyway, a thought of her has come to my mind tonight after I saw one patchwork Mag in the bookstore rack after my rushing back from work. And I'm definitely curious to see what actually patchwork is all about.

Let see, what does wiki said about patchwork?
Patchwork or "pieced work" is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. The larger design is usually based on repeat patterns built up with different colored shapes. These shapes are carefully measured and cut, basic geometric shapes making them easy to piece together. Precise joining makes for patchwork that lies flat without puckers.

Patchwork is most often used to make quilts, but it can also be used to make bags, wall-hangings, warm jackets, skirts , waistcoats and other items of clothing. Some textile artists work with patchwork, often combining it with embroidery and other forms of stitchery.

When used to make a quilt, this larger patchwork or pieced design becomes the "top" of a three layered quilt, the middle layer being the batting, and the bottom layer the backing. To keep the batting from shifting a patchwork or pieced quilt is often quilted by hand or machine using a running stitch which can outline the individual shapes that make up the pieced top, or the quilting stitches can be random or highly ordered overall patterns that contrast with the patchwork composition.

Recently, many women or housewives who have gone deeply involve into this hobby of patchworks and quilting may have turn to business activities. Their products of patchworks csn be commercialised creatively. The design has groomed to be more modern, up to date and innovatively has bring up the patchworks to the level of markets demand.  Though my friend has yet not ending herself in a business lane but her satisfaction with her work as a hobby seems to enough for her.

Like my friend as mentioned in my blog, she started learning her patchworks only by books and Mags. That how she learn from the beginning and end up making as her good hobby. Maybe we can start to earn our skill as she does ;-)
